Hey everyone, we wanted to collect some feedback about the content we’ve made in the last year (ish). Your feedback will help us steer the ship over the next year so that we create the kind of content you want to see. It’ll take less than 5 minutes, and we’ll start looking at the response on Monday, August 29th.
To celebrate reaching 100 Patrons, I answered a variety of questions from viewers, ranging from talking about who is involved in felixultimate production, to the Olympics, SotG, Mixed, recruitment, and defence which counters Hex.
00:28 – What’s the deadline for submitting questions?
00:45 – Who all is involved in FelixUltimate productions? I’m curious as to the whole structure of this enterprise.
05:28 – How can we can grow ultimate to new people. What are your ideas around that?
09:13 – What’s the single highest-quality game of Ultimate you have watched, in your opinion? Is it different from the most entertaining game?
11:40 – Is Mixed the best showcase for the game of Ultimate? Should Mixed be the primary focus for high-level.
15:04 – What are your thoughts on ultimate and the Olympics? Is getting into the Olympics a useful goal? Is the community ready for the Olympics?
17:21 – Are there any aspects of Spirit of the Game that you disagree with or think could be improved?
20:05 – If the offense and defence are playing perfectly does the offense score?
22:01 – From what other sport can you draw the most similarities too by comparing it’s strategy to ultimate strategy?
25:32 – What are some ways that the filming and production of ultimate broadcasts could be improved?
30:06 – How does hex handle a defensive look where the main cutting space is covered and cutters are being passed between defenders?
35:52 – Do you think hex (or flex) can be successfully introduced to rec league teams?
45:07 – What’s the most rewarding/enjoyable part of the work you do in Ultimate right now?
49:17 – If restrictions (film, time, ect) were a non-factor, what ulti video would you want to make?

I’m still scratching my head wondering how, when Ravi asked about teams that adopted hex/flex, I completely failed to mention the Sussex Uni club I’ve been coaching for 17 years, and who won Nationals in 2010, 2011, 2017 & 2019. Without training that club and running those sessions, a lot of the hex/flex stuff would still be theoretical and very untested. Implementing the ideas with Sussex week upon week, developing some ideas and throwing others out, and seeing how the teams perform against the others in the region and the country year upon year has kept the ideas fresh and allowed them to mature far beyond theory, to a point where I’m confident enough to produce videos on them. Can’t believe I barely mentioned Sussex – perhaps they’re somehow so close that I overlooked them? Probably just interview nerves. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the listen!

Take a look at this copy of the 1st edition (?) of the rules – given to me as an MVP prize by a long forgotten team, after a game at Paganello many years ago. Loads of quirky and interesting things within, including travels being turnovers, “this sport can be played with as many as 20 or 30 per team”, and the suggestion that hills or rivers are used as natural sideline boundaries.
