Modified End Zone Drill

This modified version of the classic end zone drill incorporates two extra passes which encourage throw’n’go moves and hitting return passes / give-go moves, adding more flow to the offence when this drill is used as a pre-match warmup, and practicing moving the disc off the sideline with a lateral give-go move. Colombia World Games squad – Felix’s Team Talk

Felix gave the Colombian World Games squad a team talk at TEP before they played a (relatively easy) match, and we filmed it! The talk is translated from English to Spanish in-person by Símon Ramirez – the talk lasted 17 mins in total, but shortened versions with the English/Spanish parts cut out are available in the Patreon post.

After this team talk, they ran Hive’s Up-Line Flow Drill, and then played their match with Felix actively coaching from the sideline & filming with a GoPro headcam. Full footage of the drill & match is linked on the Patreon post. Read more (training tier patron content)…

Is This The Most Effective Move In Ultimate?

Goldfingers passed backwards on stall zero at least 17 times on their way to victory over XL Masters – usually in a sequence of flow that leads to a goal. Is this the most effective move currently in Ultimate, and why does it work so well in Hex? Felix takes a closer look.

The team from Potsdam (Germany) played 100% Hexagon Offence for the duration of this game and tournament, earning 3rd place and setting the bar for good hex play.

Colombia WG @ TEP 2022 – Felix Report

“What I’m seeing so far, is that the “Rest of the world” are catching up” – these were the American words spoken to me by Evan Lepler during the showgame on Friday night (Evan is addressing the camera in the bottom right of the above photo). My experience so far had been similar, but in a starkly different context. I had been invited to TEP to run a Hex Clinic and assist with coaching the Colombian World Games tryout teams, but when on the sideline of the first tryouts’ game, it wasn’t the World Games team who I noticed were playing Hex, but their opponents – a team called D-Crash from Bogota. The D-Crash coach confirmed they play Hex 70% of the time. Within my first two days in Medellín, I had conversations with coaches from Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela – all had begun to introduce Hex to their teams since the pandemic and were keen to pick my brain.

Training Hex: Dynamic Hex Shape Exercise

This exercise is an engaging way to teach good spacing and hex shape. It challenges players to focus on maintaining shape under increasing amounts of defensive pressure, moving the disc quickly (stall 4 counted from anywhere), and prioritising taking the open pass over looking for yards.
